I have always wondered how exactly the coin mechanism in vending machines work. I browsed around and found some information about it that might interest you.

The coin mechanism is used for actuating the vending of a product from a machine upon the insertion of a predetermined number of specific coins. The mechanism includes a coin member having a partitioned surface that cooperates with housing parts to form a coin accumulation chamber. Upon insertion into the mechanism, the coins become aligned edgewise. The next-to-last coin is located to deflect the last coin upon a ledge. The ledge is part of the partitioned coin member and is situated to locate a portion of the coin beyond the member’s periphery. This allows contact with a pin extending from an adjacent manually rotatable lever. After inserting the specified coins, a user of the vending machine will push down on the lever, or twisting the handle. This force will be transmitted via the pin against the coin, which, in turn, transmits the force through the ledge to the coin member. As the coin member rotates, the coins drop into a coin box, while your product is being dispensed.

I’m a teacher, and with school about to begin I’ve been looking for new fun prizes to give out to the kids in my classroom.

And now with the economy so out of control and the school districts cutting funds, teachers, including myself, have had to buy a lot of the goodies we use to get from the school.

Kitschy tech is entirely too rare on CNET, which is why we couldn’t resist the Candy Comfort Earphones. These funky earbuds are decked out in candy branding and fittingly shaped like M&Ms, although that particular treat is glaringly absent from the lineup. These ‘phones may not be the best-sounding or most fully featured on the market, but the fun design is sure to appeal to some. Plus, they’re more comfortable than the stock set that came with your player. At $20 a pop (here for only $12.95), the Candy Comfort Earphones aren’t going to break the bank, but given the lackluster sound and dearth of eartips, we’d prefer a lower price point.

Certainly, the most interesting thing about the Candy Comfort Earphones is the funky paint job. You can choose from 12 types of candy: Sour Apple Blow Pops, Bubble Yum, Dots, Dubble Bubble, Jolly Rancher, Razzles, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Reese’s Pieces, Sugar Daddy, Tootsie Pop, Tootsie Roll, and York Peppermint Pattie. Each one features a different earpiece color and logo with a coordinating cable and eartips. The Dubble Bubble model, for example, has a white earbud with a red and blue logo, blue eartips, and a red cable. Unfortunately, only one set of silicone sleeves is included with each set, so while they are more comfortable than stock plastic ‘buds, not everyone will get a secure fit, and sound isolation is practically nonexistent.

Also nonexistent is bass response. The Candy Comfort Earphones aren’t going to impress discerning listeners. In fact, audio quality is about on par with what you get from a standard pair of stock earbuds, which is to say: not good. The lows lack thump, mids sound deficient, and high-end detail does not stand out. On the plus side, there’s no distortion or background hiss, and audio in general is clear. If you’re fine with the sound offered by the headphones that came with your MP3 player but want a pair with more pizazz, the Candy Comfort Earphones are a suitable option. They will at least be more comfortable.

Starting a vending machine business

When I first started out in the vending machine business I really didn’t know what to expect. I thought choosing the machines I wanted was the hard part. Little did I realize that there is a science to picking the right places to put my new machines. Then there’s the sales part of the business, convincing the business owner that having a machine would increase their sales and make their customers want to return over and over again.

I thought that locations with the most foot traffic would always be the most profitable, but I’ve found that with few exceptions it’s the employees of a business who are the ones who use the candy machines the most. It doesn’t make sense, but it’s true.

However this doesn’t apply to sticker, tattoo and capsules machines. Those seem to do better in high traffic locations like supermarkets and convenience stores. I’ve found that the only real way to tell if a location is good or bad is by trial and error. I leave my machines at a business for a few months and then I know whether it’s the right place based on the amount of money the machine generates.

Then there’s the issue of where in the business the machine would be best located. You don’t want it hidden in a dark back corner where there’s no traffic. I had one convenience store owner whose only available space was in a dark hall by the restrooms. After three months I had only made $5.00, so I took the machine out and placed it in another business. It was a big waste of my machine.

That brings me to the selling part of the business. I’ve found selling a business owner on having a vending machine in their business can be easy if you approach the owner by just starting a conversation. I’ve found you really don’t need a script, the most important thing is being honest, confident, genuine and look the person in the eye. If the business owner says no, there’s always the option of offering to pay the owner a percentage of the sales. I’ve found that 10 percent sometimes changes the owner’s mind about having a machine in their location.

Placing machines is just like any other sales job. It’s a numbers game. There are always going to be a percentage of business owners who will say yes. If you talk to enough people you will get all your machines out in the world.

A recent Danish study has found that girls have a better sense of food taste than boys, while boys are the ones with a sweet tooth. The study also noted that girls generally like milder flavors, while boys tend to like the extreme sweet and sour flavors.

The Danish study of 8,900 school children, reportedly the world’s largest, will help food formulators better understand the preferences and tastes of children and young people.

The study included a complete kit of taster samples and detailed instructions. The tests included measuring the number of taste buds, quantifying the children’s sweet and sour taste thresholds and answering questions on their eating habits and fussiness over food.

Although everyone has the same number of taste buds, apparently when children become teenagers their taste buds change and so do their food preferences.

This museum is a monument to Milton S. Hershey, who founded the company in 1894. The museum combines relics of the past, like a model of the machine used to wrap Hershey’s Kisses, along with high tech gadgets.

Hershey had several false starts in the candy making business before hitting on a winner in 1899 when he developed the Hershey process which produced a milk chocolate bar. In 1907 Hershey introduced the small flat-bottomed conical-shaped chocolate pieces he named Hershey’s Kisses. In the 1920’s Hershey added more chocolate products like the Mr. Goodbar, Hershey’s Syrup, chocolate chips and in 1938 the Krackel bar.

In 1963 Hershey acquired the Reese’s company that was founded by a past employee. That added the Reese’s peanut butter cup to his line of chocolates. Then in 1977 Hershey acquired Y & S Candies founded in 1845, and now the maker of Twizzlers licorice candies. Some of the newest products in the Hershey stable are Reeses Pieces Peanut Butter Candy , Good and Plenty and Kissables which is a smaller version of the original Hershey’s Kisses.

The researchers say it’s the high levels of flavonoids that keep away dementia and keep me smart. Now maybe my friends won’t laugh so loud when I have a cup of green tea every morning, and indulge in a glass of wine and a Tootsie Roll or a Rocky Road Bar after dinner.

Although the Oxford research isn’t a clinical test, just an observational one, it works for me. But of course the scientists warn that it’s best not to get carried away as too much chocolate and wine are both bad for my health.

As I get older it’s harder and harder to keep from gaining weight. It seems that consuming the same amount of calories that I did 10 or 15 years ago leads to more weight gain no matter how much I exercise!

Doctors have determined that the body’s energy requirements continue to decline the older we get. So if I start recording what I eat, put less food on my plate, and eat more fruits and vegetables I can control my weight gain. As I understand it, any weight gain makes me have a greater risk of getting diabetes and other chronic diseases. Those are definitely risks I don’t need.

Now I love chocolates or pretty much any candy, but for starters I have changed my in-between-meal treats to include either sugar free gum or candy or at the very most a handful of candy or a gumball rather than a big candy bar. That way I get just enough to satisfy my sweet tooth.

Find a simple wooden frame and paint it the color of your choice. Glue hard gumballs onto the frame using a hot glue gun to add a whimsical touch. Spray with an acrylic sealer to protect the surface.

Or, get an inexpensive slide-in plastic frame with no borders. Place a narrow line of craft glue (like Goop) around the front edges of the frame, and arrange candies in your favorite colors and pattern.

To create a frame for the mobile, wrap four 8″-long sticks or plastic dowels with ribbon; secure ends with glue. Lay two of the sticks parallel to each other, about 3″ apart. Place the other two sticks on top, perpendicular to the first two (in a pattern that looks like a tic-tac-toe board). Secure the four overlapping corners with thin twine. Cover the twine with 2′ strands of ribbon in a contrasting color, pulling ends up and tying them together to hang the mobile. Now tie 8 (for Hanukkah) or 12 (for Christmas) 1′-long strands of thinner ribbon to hang down from the frame. Attach candies to each strand (several pieces on each strand for the eight days of Hanukkah, two pieces on each strand for the 24 days before Christmas). Use a variety of your favorite candies or gumballs in different colors or interesting shapes. Hang the mobile, then tie a star-shaped cookie cutter in the center above the frame.

Make your first call at 9AM and your last call at 5PM. Take an hour for lunch, from 12:30-1:30. Take time to enjoy meeting people and looking at all the fun stuff they sell. Enjoy yourself. Some of the people you meet will be having bad days — don’t take their rudeness to heart. Remember. you get what you ask for, so ask for what you want! First, you want to speak with the owner or manager. Second, you want permission to put in a machine.

When you are asked to pick up a machine never bring it back to storage. Carry it to the neighboring businesses until you find it a new home. If they say “No room”, ask, “What will I have to do to get you to want to find room?”  If they say, “We already have a machine,” ask, “Would you like more variety?”  If they say ‘We had one, but it didn’t work out,” then you ask, “What was the issue?”

Ask lots of questions and then decide what incentive to offer. Some examples are: a 30-day trial, revenue sharing, or helping a charity. The key to making the sale is to ask mostly questions and never stop visiting potential customers. As you work, you will hear a vast number of “No’s,” but the occasional “Yes” will produce income for years.
