October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and throughout the month many people will host “Pink Days” and other fundraisers to raise money for cancer research. Last October, a group of friends and I organized a fundraiser with local bands, raffles, and a silent auction.

We filled assorted vases with pastel pink gumballs and hot pink gumballs to use as Breast Cancer Awareness themed decorations, and used them as raffle prizes throughout the night. Growing up we didn’t have a lot of money so we always made our mom’s birthday gifts. She always said they were her favorite. Mom is a big candy fanatic so whenever we could, we would pull our change together and get her a nice big candy bar to go with her homemade gift. When Mom turned 40, I thought it would be great to combine the idea of making her gift and adding the candy to it.

I wrote this poem using the names of different candy on a big piece of poster board. Whenever I came to a word in the poem that included candy, I would actually tape that candy to the poster. I saw this idea once before for someone’s anniversary and thought with a little tweaking it would work for any occasion. Here is my poem. Feel free to modify it for yourself.

•  Any business you already frequent, like your dry cleaners, bank, etc.

•  24-Hour Store/Restaurant because of their long hours of operation

•  Busy stores with large numbers of customers who will pass by your machine make the odds in your favor

•  Places with people waiting for the business to complete something, like oil changes or waiting rooms

•  Recreation centers that cater to lots of children

•  Laundromats. People have to wait and they have quarters on them already

•  An office break room with a large number of people working at the same time of day with limited sources of food

Find a place where there are no other bulk candy machines at the location. If you are first on the scene that’s a plus. But, if there is a machine in that location already, the ice has been broken. You can place a different style of machine that vends different products.

You get a bag of Skittles and you give a handful to each student with a piece of paper and some crayons. The students sort all the Skittles into piles by colors. They have to count each color and then on the paper you provided them, draw the corresponding number of circles in that Skittles color. They do this for each different color they received from the handful you provided.

In the four week period ending December 28, 2009 sales increased 5.1 percent over the previous December. That accounts for a yearly increase of 4.3 percent, and a continual trend of big sales in December. Some of the biggest increases were for mass merchandisers at 6.6 percent.

Chocolate singles were up 10.6 percent, non-chocolate chewy candy increased by 11.6 percent, while licorice was up 4.7 percent and sugar-free gum raised 7.3 percent in sales. And the biggest increase for overall Christmas confectionery was mass merchant sales at 7.4 percent.

Even with the economy in a slump, there’s no stopping customers from enjoying their candy and gum treat, no matter what. That’s very good news for vending machine owners everywhere.

Put out all of your Vending Machines – Most vendors I know have several machines in storage (usually several dozen).  The more machines you have in the field the better your asset will work to add money to your pockets!  Putting out more machines sounds simple, but this is a huge point.  Get those machines out of storage and get rid of that 0% return on your investments!

Evaluate Your Route - Pull the lowest 10-20% of your machines and redeploy them in brand new accounts. Some of those machines may bring in $30, $50, or $100 per servicing.

Change Your Product – Try a different candy. Change the gum to a candy choice. Try toys instead of gum or candy if it is a place frequented by children.

Find Out What The Employees Like – Don’t assume you know what they like. Ask them! It only takes one or two people to support a machine and make it a good "bread and butter" account.  Better to salvage an account by changing product than having to go out and find a new one.
