Gumballs remind me of a time when I could run outside all day barefoot and just chew my bubble gum on the porch with my friends. We would have a contest to see who could blow the biggest bubble. I never seemed to win but it was tons of fun trying.

Although there were vending machines for stick or block shaped gum as early as 1888, the first machines to carry actual gumballs were not seen until 1907 (more than likely released first by the Thomas Adams Gum Co. in the United States).

Generally, a gumball machine consists of a clear sphere (mostly glass) which is filled with gumballs, sitting on top of a metal stand. It has a metal top on top of it with a keyhole in top of it so that the top can be removed and gumballs can be put in. The coin is inserted into the base and a handle is turned around clockwise about 45 degrees, depositing the coin and allowing a gumball to be dispensed into a container at the bottom of the machine that is closed off by a little metal door. Then the handle is turned counter-clockwise about 45 degrees so that another coin can be deposited.

Most gumball machines have a simple mechanism for dispensing the gumball, to the point of the actual dispensation being mostly invisible (after turning the handle the gumball is deposited behind the door). However, some gumball machines have more tricky methods. Most of them utilize the potential energy to power various forms of transit for the gumball on its way to being dispensed, as well as ramps and drops.

Bulk vending dates back to as early as the late 19th century. Vending machines were used widely in Europe before they became very popular in the US. In the early 1880’s, the first commercial coin operated vender came out in London stocked with postcards. In 1888, the Thomas Adams Gum Company introduced bulk venders to the US, using the machines to sell Tutti Frutti gum on elevated subway platforms in New York City. In 1897, the Pulver Mfg. Company added animated figures to its gum machines. In 1907, the round gumball, a staple product in modern vending machines, came out. In 1909, Emerson A. Bolen formed the Northwestern Novelty Company, selling the Yankee, a penny matchstick vending machine, at this point Bolen’s company is now one of the most popular bulk vending machine manufacturers. In 1913, Ford Mason leased 102 machines and placed them in stores and shops of communities in western New York, he would eventually open the Ford Gum and Machine Company, an empire of over half a million vending machines. In 1948, Oak Manufacturing opened up; it would become one of the largest equipment manufacturers in the vending industry ever. In 1949, Roger C. Folz purchased his first vending machine, Folz Vending was the largest operator of bulk vending equipment in the US, owning and operating over 150,000 machines nationwide at their peak.

In 1950, the US Treasury Department attempted to impose gambling excise taxes on bulk vendors on the grounds that there was no way for consumers to know for sure which item the machine would dispense. For a short time, manufacturers installed viewfinders in bulk vending machines to display the next item to be purchased. Vendors organized to found the National Bulk Vendors Association (NBVA), which successfully lobbied against the taxes, saying that items being vended were of equivalent value. The NBVA has since lobbied on behalf of bulk vendors on a variety of issues.

Bulk Vending For All Ages

Something new for all ages

Last week I took my kids grocery shopping. On our way out of the supermarket they always want to stop by the vending machines. So we did.

Much to their excitement the machines have some new toys to choose from.

My fashion conscious 11-year-old daughter’s eyes fell on the machine with 1” True Color Rings . There was everything from hip hot pink, brilliant blue, sunflower yellow, purple and green rings all in different designs including red hearts, flowers, and the classic shapes like squares and ovals.

She put her 25 cents in the machine and much to her delight the capsule with the hip hot pink ring was her prize for the day. Suddenly she’s into going grocery shopping with me all the time. I know it’s only because she wants to get all 15 different rings.

Meantime my seven-year-old son spied the Spy Ear Vending Capsules in another machine. They are 2” capsules with handcuffs, guns, spy ear and more. He’s been playing cops and robbers with the kid next door, so getting the handcuffs was perfect. The he saw the Mini Flashlight capsules and asked for another quarter to get a flashlight to go with the handcuffs. I noticed they all come with a ring for his key chain.

He looked all the flashlights over and had a hard time picking which one he wanted. The choices included a yellow and red purse (not), a yellow lady big, a green tennis racket or a blue hand grenade. When the blue hand grenade came flying out of the chute he decided that was perfect to go along with the handcuffs.

Now it was my other son’s turn to pick a machine. He was all eyes for the Cartoon Projector 2” Vending Capsules. I had never seen them before, so he told me all about them. He said the projectors beam onto any surface and a cartoon image appears. So for a couple of quarters I made one five-year-old happy.

Now my kids want to go grocery shopping with me every week so that they can add to their collection of new toys.

I would imagine that the person who owns those vending machines will be busy keeping them filled since there was a line of kids waiting to spend their quarters on the new toys.

Gumball Machine delights our daughter

My sister told me about these little bright red gumball banks she ordered for her kids online from candymachines.com . So for Christmas my dad bought one for our 4-year-old daughter.

It came full of white, orange, pink, yellow and green gumballs, and it is the perfect size for her little fingers. Dad gave her some coins too, and we had so much fun watching her. She gets really serious when she puts the coin in the slot and slides the handle, then suddenly she screams with delight every time a gumball drops down the chute. Now she has us all playing a guessing game of which color gumball will come down the chute next.

I like the fact that it is safe for her because it is made of a heavy plastic, not glass, and also it is made in the U.S.A.

Dad said when we run out of gumballs we can order more from candymachines.com and that they even carry Sugar Free gumballs. I see on their website that when my daughter gets older we have lots of bigger gumball banks to choose from!

How to be the Hero at Christmas!

I have a very large family. I am one of 11 children. Most of my siblings have kids so it can be a bit costly come Christmas time. Every year I have to walk the line of getting something awesome for them and not spending a lot of money for my husband. This year I decided to get everyone their own gumball machines!

I got 6 of the small gumball banks from candymachines.com in both colors, red and silver with jr. gumballs of course. When my nieces and nephews, ranging in ages from 6 – 10 years old, opened up their gifts, the expressions on their little faces were priceless! They screamed with delight and immediately put the quarter I had taped to the box in the machine for their first piece of gum. I also got a Tim Mee toy gumball machine for my 2 year old nephew so that he could join in the fun. He put his penny in and of course had so much fun making it work he started looking for other pennies.

I didn’t want to leave my kids out but they are teenagers and gumball banks maybe a little too young for them so I got them their very own gumball vending machine for the family room. They were so excited to see it. For one quarter, they get a 1” gumball . We get to keep the quarters and replenish the stock of gumballs when it runs out.
