The great news is that candy and gum dollar sales are on the increase, according to Information Resources, Inc.

In the four week period ending December 28, 2009 sales increased 5.1 percent over the previous December. That accounts for a yearly increase of 4.3 percent, and a continual trend of big sales in December. Some of the biggest increases were for mass merchandisers at 6.6 percent.

Chocolate singles were up 10.6 percent, non-chocolate chewy candy increased by 11.6 percent, while licorice was up 4.7 percent and sugar-free gum raised 7.3 percent in sales. And the biggest increase for overall Christmas confectionery was mass merchant sales at 7.4 percent.

Even with the economy in a slump, there’s no stopping customers from enjoying their candy and gum treat, no matter what. That’s very good news for vending machine owners everywhere.

Some of the people you meet will be having bad days — don’t take their rudeness to heart. Remember. you get what you ask for, so ask for what you want! First, you want to speak with the owner or manager. Second, you want permission to put in a machine.

When you are asked to pick up a machine never bring it back to storage. Carry it to the neighboring businesses until you find it a new home. If they say “No room”, ask, “What will I have to do to get you to want to find room?”  If they say, “We already have a machine,” ask, “Would you like more variety?”  If they say ‘We had one, but it didn’t work out,” then you ask, “What was the issue?”

Ask lots of questions and then decide what incentive to offer. Some examples are: a 30-day trial, revenue sharing, or helping a charity.
