M&M’s – An inspired candy!

Do you know the history of the M&M?  The founder of Mars Company got the idea for the chocolate confection in the 1930’s during the Spanish Civil War when he saw soldiers eating chocolate pellets with hard shells of chocolate – which prevented the candies from melting.  So, Mars got a patent for his own process and started producing them in 1941, and were served in cardboard tubes.  They really caught on during World War II and were exclusively sold to the military during the war.

Dad’s Candy
Recently I lost my father to liver cancer. He was way too young and it was way too fast. As I try to move on from this life altering event, I start to remember the little things that never seemed so important. Things like: he drove a black truck, his favorite shirt was the one with the stripes, and he was a sucker for chocolate.
My dad could have his Reese’s anytime of the day or night. It was one of his favorite things. If the grandkids came to visit they would go right for his candy stash. It was something that at the time upset me as their parent. You know the whole ruin the dinner and all. Now I look back on it and smile fondly.
I have a bag of Reese’s Pieces on my desk. I look at it and smile and think of my Dad. I will share that bag in his honor with whoever walks into my office at whatever time of day. I will also share that bag of Reese’s with any of my co-worker’s children that come into the office, no matter how close it is to dinner time.

Growing up we didn’t have a lot of money so we always made our mom’s birthday gifts. She always said they were her favorite. Mom is a big candy fanatic so whenever we could, we would pull our change together and get her a nice big candy bar to go with her homemade gift. When Mom turned 40, I thought it would be great to combine the idea of making her gift and adding the candy to it.

I wrote this poem using the names of different candy on a big piece of poster board. Whenever I came to a word in the poem that included candy, I would actually tape that candy to the poster. I saw this idea once before for someone’s anniversary and thought with a little tweaking it would work for any occasion. Here is my poem. Feel free to modify it for yourself.

In 1950, the very first “M” was printed in black.  It gave them their unique trademark and was eventually changed to white.

– The same blue food dye found in M&Ms and Gatorade could be used to reduce damage caused by spine injuries, offering a better chance of recovery, according to new research.

Rats injected with BBG not only regained their mobility but temporarily turned blue.

Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that when they injected the compound Brilliant Blue G (BBG) into rats suffering spinal cord injuries, the rodents were able to walk again, albeit with a limp.

The only side effect was that the treated mice temporarily turned blue.

The results of the study, published in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,” build on research conducted by the same center five years ago.

In August 2004, scientists revealed how Adenosine triphosphate, which is known as ATP and described as the “energy currency of life,” surges to the spinal cord soon after injury occurs.

Researchers found that the sudden influx of ATP killed off healthy cells, making the initial injury far worse. But when they injected oxidized ATP into the injury, it was found to block the effect of ATP, allowing the injured rats to recover and walk again.

“While we achieved great results when oxidized ATP was injected directly into the spinal cord, this method would not be practical for use with spinal cord-injured patients,” said lead researcher Maiken Nedergaard, professor of Neurosurgery and director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

“First, no one wants to put a needle into a spinal cord that has just been severely injured, so we knew we needed to find another way to quickly deliver an agent that would stop ATP from killing healthy motor neurons. Second, the compound we initially used, oxidized ATP, cannot be injected into the bloodstream because of its dangerous side effects.”

M&M’s have a long history in the United States . They were first produced in New Jersey in 1941 by a company owned by Forrest Mars, Sr. He got the idea for M&M’s during the Spanish Civil War when he saw soldiers eating Smarties, a chocolate morsel covered with a hard sugar shell so that the chocolate wouldn’t melt.

When Mars introduced M&M’s to the G.I.s during World War II they were an immediate hit so production was increased and the candies were sold exclusively to the military.

Originally M&M’s were sold in cardboard tubes, but in 1948 Mars decided to replace the cardboard tube with cellophane packaging like they are sold today.

Throughout the years Mars has added new products and made changes generated by public demand. The Peanut Chocolate candies were introduced in 1954, along with the famous slogan, “the milk chocolate that melts in your mouth, not in your hand”. The M&M’s candies colors have come and gone through the years.

During the 1970′s the red candies were eliminated due to health concerns over the dye amaranth (red dye). Even though Mars didn’t contain the dye, the red M&M’s were replaced with the orange colored candies. In 1987 the public had forgotten the scare and Mars reintroduced the red M&M’s. Today the color scheme is mostly red, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow and brown, all with the same taste.

Throughout the years nearly a dozen varieties of the chocolates have been marketed, including dark chocolate, dark chocolate peanut, almond, peanut butter, minis, premiums and last year M&M’s released the Wildly Cherry Chocolate candies.

The world’s chocolate hunger can be met by increasing the cacao tree growing area and by increasing the yield of cacao per acre. Since the cacao tree is mostly grown in the poor countries of the world, the farmers generally can’t afford fertilizer or pesticides. The farmers continue to expand their crops by slashing and burning patches of rainforest. This releases nutrients that make the trees thrive for awhile, then the farmers move to a new patch of rainforest.

In the 1920′s Hershey added more chocolate products like the Mr. Goodbar, Hershey’s Syrup, chocolate chips and in 1938 the Krackel bar.

In 1963 Hershey acquired the Reese’s company that was founded by a past employee. That added the Reese’s peanut butter cup to his line of chocolates. Then in 1977 Hershey acquired Y & S Candies founded in 1845, and now the maker of Twizzlers licorice candies.
