M&M’s – An inspired candy!

Do you know the history of the M&M? The founder of Mars Company got the idea for the chocolate confection in the 1930’s during the Spanish Civil War when he saw soldiers eating chocolate pellets with hard shells of chocolate – which prevented the candies from melting. So, Mars got a patent for his own process and started producing them in 1941, and were served in cardboard tubes. They really caught on during World War II and were exclusively sold to the military during the war.

Did you also know that the color mix of M&M’s isn’t just random? The mix is actually a result of consumer preference tests! According to M&M’s website, each package of Milk Chocolate M&M’s should contain: 24% blue, 14% brown, 16% green, 20% orange, 13% red and 14% yellow. Now, who wants to buy a bunch of M&M’s and test the statistics? Any takers? www.candymachines.com

The healing power of Chocolate

One of the most popular chocolate brands there is and that has always been my favorite are M&M’s, such beautiful colors that adorn them makes it delectable to our brain, at least to me. Every time I open a bag of them I tend to eat them by color. It’s a small guilty pleasure I have, because it’s not too much chocolate nor to little, but just the right amount.

It seems to me than when we receive a box of chocolates or a bag of chocolates, it brings a smile to our face, why does this happen? Is it something in the ingredients of the chocolate? Or just because we tend to stereotype the concept of receiving chocolates for a special occasion and cognitively know that we have to like it?

Well scientists have found that dark chocolate reduces the risk of cardiovascular problems as well as chocolate helps boost your cognitive abilities, among other things. So in conclusion, whether you eat chocolate for their natural benefits or for a nightly pleasure, grab a bag of your favorite chocolate and enjoy.

In 1941, American GI’s serving in WWII were introduced to what were soon to be America’s favorite candy coated chocolates.
When M&M’s first came out, they were packaged in cardboard tubes. In 1948, the packaging was changed to what we know as the little brown bags today.
In 1950, the very first “M” was printed in black. It gave them their unique trademark and was eventually changed to white.
Over the next couple years, the Peanut M&M was finally introduced and in 1954, the tagline: “Melts in your mouth, not in your hands” was born.
During that same time, the world famous M&M’s characters made their TV debut.
M&M’s were finally introduced internationally in 1980 and have been an American classic/favorite ever since.

Have you ever wondered why those delicious pop-in-your-mouth M&M’s candies came to be?

Since they’re my favorite candy I had to know. Here’s what I found out………..

M&M’s have a long history in the United States . They were first produced in New Jersey in 1941 by a company owned by Forrest Mars, Sr. He got the idea for M&M’s during the Spanish Civil War when he saw soldiers eating Smarties, a chocolate morsel covered with a hard sugar shell so that the chocolate wouldn’t melt.

When Mars introduced M&M’s to the G.I.s during World War II they were an immediate hit so production was increased and the candies were sold exclusively to the military.

Originally M&M’s were sold in cardboard tubes, but in 1948 Mars decided to replace the cardboard tube with cellophane packaging like they are sold today.

Throughout the years Mars has added new products and made changes generated by public demand. The Peanut Chocolate candies were introduced in 1954, along with the famous slogan, “the milk chocolate that melts in your mouth, not in your hand”. The M&M’s candies colors have come and gone through the years.

During the 1970′s the red candies were eliminated due to health concerns over the dye amaranth (red dye). Even though Mars didn’t contain the dye, the red M&M’s were replaced with the orange colored candies. In 1987 the public had forgotten the scare and Mars reintroduced the red M&M’s. Today the color scheme is mostly red, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow and brown, all with the same taste.

Throughout the years nearly a dozen varieties of the chocolates have been marketed, including dark chocolate, dark chocolate peanut, almond, peanut butter, minis, premiums and last year M&M’s released the Wildly Cherry Chocolate candies.

Today the M&M logo extends to everything from a jigsaw puzzle and Christmas ornaments to a night light. All of these products are available from candymachines.com at great prices, plus you can order M&M Plain Chocolate candy and M&M’s Peanut Candies in bags for personal use or cases for vending machine owners.
