Back to School with Skittles Math

When I taught preschool, one of the challenges for my students was learning to sort by color and counting the items specifically. The other teachers and I would use Skittles to help the kids grasp this concept.

You get a bag of Skittles and you give a handful to each student with a piece of paper and some crayons. The students sort all the Skittles into piles by colors. They have to count each color and then on the paper you provided them, draw the corresponding number of circles in that Skittles color. They do this for each different color they received from the handful you provided.

The best part is, when they are all done with the project, they get to eat the Skittles! Since Skittles are gluten free, you usually do not run into any issues. You can also do this same project with M&M’s if you like chocolate better.
